on the market report where heifers 200-300lbs are going for 142-147 then 300-400 are going for 122-129? makes no sense one 300lber is going for 13 cents higher.....take a look>>>>>>> Feeder Heifers: Medium & Large 1-2 200-300 lbs 142.00-147.00; 300-400 lbs
122.00-129.00; 400-500 lbs 111.00-118.00; 500-600 lbs 105.00-110.00; 600-700 lbs
98.00-105.00.

will someone explain

I don't understand the confusion either.

Three years ago is when it got confusing. Lightweight heifers were in the 80 cent range. I bought 20 that were 300 to 400. 800 to 900 were in the 90's. Corn prices had everything upside down then.

I don't know where you come up with 13 cents. Looks more like 18-20 cents to me. Either way, not all 300 pounders are created equal. Quality, as well as weight, will have something to do with the price.

P.S. I see where the 13 cents came from now. I was looking at the difference between the lows and the highs.

I wouldn't put too much stock in those "Market Reports" anyhow. At least here they are very seldom accurate. I sold some calves a couple months ago and only one of them sold for more than their "low" price. I was at the sale and would guess that over 50% that sold that day didn't make it into the "report"

I'll second not getting pulled into the reports- the reporters around here sometimes seems like they didn't go to the same sale I went to-- if they went at all. I wish the stockyards would just post sale results. With computers it would be easy to do now adays.

I ain't going to explain but it has been that way here all my life, and I have had many arguments, discussions. I can sell a 400 pound calf and make as much money selling a larger calf, so why hold on to the little leach. Take your stock report which looks like a typical one here average the weight and price a 450 weight will bring 562 bucks and a 550 weight brings 588. IMO your wasting time and money holding on to calves pulling cows down and increasing feed requirements.

Here is a copy of the barn I use the scale will slide up and down but the spread on weights is always there.

Steers: Medium and Large 1 300-400 lbs 148.00-156.00, thin 164.00; 400-500

Market reports vary depending on who is doing the reporting. Some sales have a gov. market reporter (like the one Caustic shared) that watch the sale and report on the cattle using USDA frame and muscle scores (large and medium 1 and large and medium 2). They report on the highs and lows within each weight and quality grade. Some sales that don't have a gov. reporter will make their own report. They report on the front end of the calves. Nothing dishonest on their reports, just most of us don't produce all #1 cattle (just in our own opinions and they don't really count).
