Wayland was a good ol country boy that stayed true to his roots
He'd put on a free concert for his hometown every 4th of July.
Then the city started trying to profit from his generosity.
He told them he was doing it for the people in the area that supported him and paid to see him back when he was trying to make it.
He just wanted to show his appreciation and wanted it to be free, but they wouldnt listen so he quit doing it
He lived a hard life before he got clean but it took a toll on him
Reminds of another story about buddy holly
Richardson had contracted flu during the tour and asked Waylon Jennings for his seat on the plane. When Holly learned that Jennings was not going to fly, he said in jest, "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up." Jennings responded, "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes," a humorous but ill-fated response that haunted Jennings for the rest of his life.
