I didn't get many heifers this year

Help Support CattleToday:

Really nice heifers, but those white barked trees in the background always catch my eye first in your pictures.
They are a little strange to my eyes.

I agree with @gcreekrch ... 18 is my least favorite of them...but she has good length to her body and a good topline also... maybe a little more leg than some of them.... Still a nice heifer... but just doesn't catch me... I like the last 2; 14 and 9.... heavier chunky build... I like a stout leg on a beef animal... and this coming from a "dairy person" with their much more slender/fine builds....
nice topline on the first younger one...;)

Any particular reason Dave?

Maybe just the photo Ken but she appears shallow made and hound gutted. I have also observed there is very little weight between the belly and the ground. Maybe in person she is the best of the lot and may be the best producer in time but that is what I see.

That was my first thought when scrolling through the pictures. I just don't see enough middle in the picture. But to me calves are a bit like foals. When you see them in a couple years you can be surprised.
Edit: the V17 calf appear to have a lot more depth and I'd guess will be the most productive of the class

But the ones I got are out of some good cows. I only want to keep 6 this year. I don't have to decide until March but these 6 are starting to catch my eye. The first one is only about 2 months old but she always seems to catch my eyeView attachment 51412View attachment 51413View attachment 51414View attachment 51416View attachment 51417
What a fun bunch of heifers! I'm in the camp of not really sure why I like one over another, but I just do. "Usually" ones I pick as favorites at a younger age, stay there, but some I don't care for at first, really grow on me. Just from the pics available, and after really trying to figure out WHY I like them:
Top 4 - V9 Was drawn to her right off the bat. Already deeper in the back half than in the front half (my favorite "cow" look).
V14 A lot like V9 with the build and looks like really good set to legs and nice top line, maybe even more length than V9?
V17 Drawn to her, too, but took a couple looks, I like her better each time I look at her. More feminine than the V24 heifer, better top.
V40 Really nice top line, length, and carry down. Being the youngest will be interested in how she develops compared to the others.

Then, for me, V24 She reminds me of a Tahoe/Rainfall heifer I had. Really stout, kinda flabby, didn't like her at first, bit of a weak top line, disposition not the best. But as a weanling/yearling she started to grow on me. Attitude improved after weaning, stretched a little, kept her stoutness. Really started to like her a lot, however, she didn't breed, so down the road she went.
V18 Don't like the little bit of roach back and shallowness of her body. Kind of a tube look right now.
I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO CHANGE MY OPINIONS.

Now... How are these bred???? :)

If I were to pick three to start an angus herd it would be V14, V24 and V17. They look like they are from cows
that milk really well and they look like they would be easy keepers. I think :)

I'm not sure what trees you are referring to, most of our trees are eucalypts. I think the one behind the 1st heifer is a yellow box gum. We have a lot of brown gum and grey gum that have darker bark around the base but on the fresher growth up higher is quite white. Up the back there we have some spotted gum which is a great milling timber, other good milling timber is the yellow box and stringy bark.

I might be a bit blinded with V18, as she is from a really good cow both phenotype and performance, I will confess that V18 is by a calving ease bull SS Brickyard as her mother being by Resource has woefull calving ease figures yet not experienced that in real life and I am trying to moderate that a bit I also used Brickyard on a few heifer and so far have been a bit disappointed in them though they seem to be getting a bit of a go on now, they were born in July.
