Hey guys and gals, I created this account a few years back, but have recently been lurking daily and figured I may as well introduce myself!

I'm in West Kentucky, retired from the Coast Guard in early '19, and have been on the ranching adventure since then.

After trying to run a herd with my aging father, which didn't work out to well, finally finished getting my own place fenced (about 80 acres) and have 20 Black Angus heifers about 8 to 10 months old I bought from a neighbor. Will be going to a CPH-45 sale this week to try and pick up 10 to 15 more to blend in with the ones I have now.

I'm planning on running a cow/calf operation, albeit a slow starting one since I'm running heifers that I won't be able to put a bull with until this summer. But you have to start somewhere.

That could be too much info for an intro-but hey, I'm new :)

I figured it wouldn't hurt to put up a couple of photos of my girls, with any luck, I'll find them some sisters tomorrow!

Nice heifers. What do you plan to breed them to? Angus? Simmental? Black Hereford? Longhorn?

Any plans for a hay ring? See, we are trying to be helpful already. :)
I love the Hereford, but the market here is all Black Angus. So it'll be an Angus bull when the time comes. My last herd had all sorts of color, and was discounted as such when we sold.

As far as the hay ring, I have a beautiful heavy one, and am not planning to use it. This farm had been row cropped for the past 25-30 years, and it needs organic matter back in the soil badly. Since I have an extreme excess of hay this year, I'm going to let them "waste" quite a bit, knowing that it's a good thing for the soil 😊
