Go to user control panel, pick the profile tab and the avitar option is on the left.

That is the best way. You can even cut down your own pics to size and upload it for an avatar.

Avatars are awarded to only the best members. The moderators try to give avatars that are appropriate to the member. They gave me Columbo because I'm so smart yet modest. Some members have big fat bulls as avatars because they are full of BS. Keep posting and maybe you'll have an avatar one day.
