I called the local sale barn and they couldn't give me an average sales price per wt.... I am planning on making an offer on some cattle through a private deal....I need a base line to start my offer. Any advice??

i do a google search - for my local salebarn i type in "green city mo ams" if i want the weighted average i type in "green city mo weighted average"

i would think it should work for your local salebarn as it is posted under a USDA site.

You're about 110 miles from Meridian, TX. They post results on the web. If this link works here you go: http://www.mlslivestock.com/new_page_6.htm

It is a very tiny sale. I wish Dublin posted their results. I hate to go and sit through 6 to 8 hours of cows and then the calves start.

How to interpret the data....

#212 Range 500 - 545 AVG 526 $93.00-$125.00 $116.37

Price is per 100lbs, I assume. So if reports say $116.37 for 500-550lb they mean $116.37 x 506 lb (5.06) = $588.83 for that animal ??? (Remember beginners board)

Good link TXBobcat.... based on this info, a person would offer a price based overall weight. This price would slightly decrease with a heavier animal???

#1 TYPE HEIFERS
200# - 300# ---------------------------------------------------------------- $100.00 $135.00 per cwt.
300# - 400# ---------------------------------------------------------------- $95.00 $120.00 per cwt.
400# - 500# ---------------------------------------------------------------- $90.00 $121.00 per cwt.
500# - 600# ---------------------------------------------------------------- $85.00 $107.00 per cwt.
600# - 700# ---------------------------------------------------------------- $80.00 $109.00 per cwt

So weight the bunch and pay based on average herd/combined weight. Also, I imagine you should be prepared to pay more for a private auction than sale barn pricing???

That is hard to say. It depends on the cattle at both places. Some times I see cattle at the sale barn I'd be willing to pay significantly more for. Old timers often get their estates sold out when the kids come in to liquidate every thing. Those cattle often go through the sale barns.

I had a lady ask a friend to come out and bid on her cattle. He asked me to go. We got there and they were all northen climate cows. We didn't even offer a bid. Buyers at the sale barn would take them for hamburger and probably pay more than I would.

So all I can tell you is, "It depends."

Give me the specifics and breed, heck I might buy them out from under you

The is too much variation to get an average. That is why salebarns usually quote prices in ranges. here is the report from last Saturdays sale:
Steers

300 down: 1.07 - 1.24

300 - 400: 1.01 - 1.24

400 - 500: 1.01 - 1.18

500 - 600: 1.01 - 1.19

600 - 700: 0.89 - 1.07

700 - 800: 0.87 - 0.99

Heifers

300 down: 0.90 - 1.30

300 - 400: 0.94 - 1.18

400 - 500: 0.95 - 1.19

500 - 600: 0.93 - 1.21

600 - 700: 0.83 - 0.95
