How to get EPDs

How are a Bulls EPD's determined? How much does it cost to get EPDs done for a bull in your herd? Can anybody get EPD's done on a bull? Can EPDs be determined for a young bull under a year old? Thank you

A bull's EPDs are created using his own performance (birth, weaning, yearling weights, hip height, etc.) and information reported on close relatives, brothers, sisters, etc. Breed associations publish EPDs, you should contact them for more information. Most of the associations have websites. When you register an Angus calf their EPDs are printed on their registration certificate, so they don't have to be a year old. You do have to request EPDs on some breeds and there is a charge. So, again, contact the association of the breed you're interested in. Good luck...

In the Simmental breed, you can also get EPD's before a calf is born - even before you breed the cow. They have "planned mating" where you list the cow & the bull and they will give you the predicted EPD's - no charge. They also give EPD's on crossbreds. Jeanne

> How are a Bulls EPD's determined? In the Angus breed EPDs on a bull are compiled when breeders turn in weights, heights, and other measurements on a calf crop as the calves grow. There are certain age ranges when certain maesurements are taken. Assuming the group is large enough to make comparisons, the performance of a particular calf will be taken into consideration when his sire and dam's EPDs are adjusted (done twice a year). The calf will also be given starting EPDs based on his performance. At birth a calf is given an Interim EPD which is basicaly an average of his sire's and dam's EPDs.

If your bull has EPDs and you just want to find out what they are you can look him up on the internet, or Pay $2.00 for a report. Anyone can request a report on any animal. Hope this Helps

Thank you but who are "they". Where do I get the predicted EPD's from?

All EPD's are generated by breed associations. Each breed assn. has their own method & their own breed averages and their own price schedule. What breed are you working with? If you do not belong to a national breed association, you would have to call the assn. you are interested in getting epd's on, and ask them.
