How much hay does a horse need per day when no grazing is provided? These horses are not worked hard. How much hay does the average horse need per day if there is no grazing? How about a cow when no grazing?

Depends on the size of the horse, but on your average 15 - 16 hh horse we feed about 25-30 lbs per day in the winter. They don't get any grain, except for treats, unless they are working pretty hard.

At minimum a horse should have 1/2 of a small square per day and many horses, particuarly larger horses will go through about a bale per day. Standard that nutritionist say is 2 % of body weight in dry matter intake. Feed above that because your hay may be 8 or 10% moisture and there is some waste and selective feeding involved, especially in first cut grass hay. I have noticed the cows are about the same.

An average 1000 pound horse who isn't worked requires about 15 lbs. of hay a day to keep him going.
