how much grain

Help Support CattleToday:

Are you just weaning it? Bucket calf? Not enough information

Best thing is to read the backs of bags, search the various feed companies on the net etc. We are partial to Cargill (Nutrena, Acco)products and they have a good website that explains the feeding directions of their products. :cboy:

a 6 month old calf thats a 4h project id feed as much i could get her to eat.if im right she has to meet a min weight to make it in that show.so id try to get her to eating 10 to 15lbs grain.an all the hay she will eat.last calf i pushed for a show like that was eating 20lbs feed a day an 10lbs alalfa a day.

Has the calf been on any feed prior to being weaned? Start it out slowly... a few lbs. twice a day with free choice coastal or similar hay. You can slowly increase the feed over time, but watch the calf and make sure it's stools are still firm, and watch for bloat. My show calves also eat about 20 lbs of feed a day.. but they are yearlings.
