I saw a comment on another post and it raised this question to me. How is it that the most wanted, and highest priced calves here locally, black baldys, are produced from the most discounted cows here locally, Herefords?

It just seems bass ackwards that cows that produce the most desireable calves, are the most discounted. Can anyone explain this to me?

Is it like this in other areas also?

Now, I am not very old, but it has been this way since I could remember.

I've never figured it out eaither, but I hope it continues. Those cheap Hereford cows bred to a god angus bull will/are sure bet money makers.

they are among my favorite cows for that very reason.. however a good rwf cow will bring pretty good money in my area... but overall they are discounted some.

Around here, from Springfield east they get hit pretty hard, but around Joplin they do ok. Go figure

You can get black baldys from black cattle and a Hereford bull, too. But, in my area, black cows have been outselling Hereford cows for years. But not, necessarily outselling red baldy cows. I don't mean to bash Herefords here, but the more "Hereford" a cow looks, it seems the less popular she is at the sale barn.
