He has good lines especially on the sire side but the birth weight (BW) is a little higher than I would breed to Angus heifers. Hope this sight helps, it has alittle about EPDs.

I have a few 878 daughters and like them very much I wouldn't worry too much about the BW EPD's unless the heifers are small. You can do a pelvic measurement to see if all are in proportion.

I've been told by two old timer beef cattle raisers that birth weight doesn't have to be a concern IF you cut back on the feed during the last two months before the calf is due. I recall that they were talking about protein in particular. I'd talk with a vet before taking this for fact. Maybe more than one vet

Cutting back on the nutrition of the cow is begging problems. You can;t starve a small calf out of a cow. But there are old timers that also think that the direction the cow is facing when she;s bred will affect the gender of the calf!

You are very correct Dun. (On cutting back nutrition) In fact, there are studies saying to feed the cow a high fat diet before calving to insure calf health after birth. (Fat is the main growth component in pre and post partum calf growth)

Not sure if I did the quote right-- but I wasjust thinking about that - i read that if the cow is facing South it'll be a bull calf, if it's facing North it'll be heifer... our chute is facing due South, and of course I want a heifer!!

And our chute now faces due north and we get right at 50:50

I agree on the nutrition! If you cut back nutrition it hurts the cow as well. And if you cut back it will only cause the calf to be a couple of pounds at best, different than if you kept her nutritionally sound. Secondly, if the cow is weak from not getting enough nutrition she is much more likely to have calving trouble, than if she was nutritionally sound trying to have a larger calf.

We have a AI tech that helps out of our office that is a purina rep and nutrition specialist. I could listen to him talk all day... :) Good luck guys. Don't go by everything you hear....lot's of bad info out there that can leave you hurting in the end!

Hey Mike...I definitely am! I love it here!! :) Not planning on leaving...unless they boot me. But I don't think that'll happen. Haha. :) I posted a message for you on the breeds board Mike!

sss,
Can you give me his registration #. I would like to see his pedigree but the link does not work for me. If I had his # I could look it up myself
