ive seen a day old calf swim across a wide and deep pond when all it had to do was walk about 10 feet to the left to get around it. whatever works.

Neighbor has a creek running through part of her front pasture. Cows always seem to stash their calves on the far side that is really wooly and nasty and can;t be gotten to without wading the creek. Last spring she was worried because one of the cows was on the good pasture side of the creek and her calf was on the rough side. With help, she finally got the calf back with the cow. Half an hour later the cow and calf were back on the rough side, a little while later the cow w2as back on the good side and the calf was bedded down in the junk. That evening the calf was with the cow for an hour or 2 then back to the jungle.
