how do i know if my calf that i bought can be bred in the future i don' know if she comes from twins can i stick a pen in her vulva to tell?

Help Support CattleToday:

I've had people telling me is they would stick a pen in the calf's vulva dose that really work and how can i do it my self?
(facepalm)

Is there any reason to think the calf is a twin?

I don't know of a single person that has ever bought a bottle calf that worried about whether they would breed. And they would certainly not stick a hard object anywhere as fragile as the inside of a vagina.

Raise the calf and if she breeds, she breeds. If she doesn't, she goes in the freezer.

my plan with her is to breed her and have a calf and then use her as a foster mom for other bottle calf's i have had dairy farmers tell me a way and easy way to tell if she can be bred is to stick a pen in her vulva i got her from a friend not sure if she is from a twin bull that's what I'm worried about

How old are you?

Just learn how to take care of your calf and don't worry about the rest. And never put anything in the calf's vulva.
ok will do i know there is freemartin tests that i saw that they take 3mL of the calf's blood to a lab that can also be done which is only $55 might need to look into that thanks for the advice(y)

just did some more research the freemartin probe test is only used for calf's under 30 days so i can not use the probe test since she is 5 months old about to be 6 soon i will just wait intel i can see when she has her first couple heat cycles thank you have a happy holiday!

Let me ask this... if she is a twin.... to a bull.... then what will you do with her???? I mean, in the meantime... what will do with her???
If you plan to raise her up anyway... then a vet can tell when she is about a year old in most cases... You would not be breeding her before 15 months at least... so at this point it doesn't make a difference unless you were planning to just get rid of her right away if she is a twin to a bull...
Sticking a pen in her vulva is a pretty crude way of "trying her"... and by no means very efficient. An experienced breeder can feel some of the differences if her reproductive tract is not intact... some of them come in heat too, so there is that.
What kind of calf is she? About how old ??? (Baby bottle calf or bigger?)... How big was she if a bottle calf...
If you got her from a friend... then ASK THEM......
