Our five year old female black angus cow is having issues with her back hoof. There is a growth in between the claws...my dad calls it a quill. This is the second time she has had this issue. Last year about this time it appeared, small at first and didn't bother her at all. Then it got bigger and bigger. She started limping ......then she grew a new hoof. It was fine until a couple weeks ago and it is back, getting bigger and she is limping more. Just wanted to see if anyone knows what causes this and is there anything that can be done to prevent it. She does have one on the other back hoof but it is small and has never bothered her and does not get bigger.

Call your vet and have them look at it. I had a sim cow do that. we got her over it and shipped her but for the life of me can't remember what it was. Vet told me it would keep coming back so I got her to the point she didn't limp and sent her to the kill pen and bought another cow.
