That's not the real world, hurley. Rulers, yard sticks, tape measures, wrenches, etc., I see them every day.

Adding and subtracting fractions were taught when I was in school. When I went to work fractions were never used. The manufacturing world had moved on to decimal equivalents. No need for a common denominater.

The part of the manufacturing world you're in may be all decimals, but not all of it, and the construction industry definitely uses fractions. I do CAD work, and am comfortable with both, but I need to know which to use on a drawing. I use decimals for parts that will be machined, but if I handed our construction supervisor a set of drawings for concrete and rebar with decimals he'd throw them back at me.

Jo it was weird to me because most of the time i have never seen kids in 4th grade need calculators.

Daughter scored 80% and 100% on her algebra tonight!
