Im not new to livestock but I am new to cattle. Recently bought two Holstein/ Hertford cross calves. One steer, one heifer. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this cross and turning them into freezer beef?

When I was growing up, there were a lot of dairies around here, About half of them bred their heifers to Jersey bulls, and the others used Angus and Hereford bulls. Any and every one who raised their own beef, bought these calves to feed out and butcher. You could hardly pass a house in the country that didn't have one or two of them they were feeding out. And those half-Holstein heifers made excellent nurse cows as well. We have a Herford x Guernsey nurse cow ourselves. And a lot of people raised the Jersey x Holstein steers to butcher as well. Old timers called them "sweet meat". You might even think about keeping your heifer and making her a nurse cow. Buy another calf or 2 when she freshens, and let her raise them for you.
