Alfalfa is a forage up here in Canada lol. There's a difference between enough and too much of everything and anything.

It's all "forage" whether it's a sack of alfalfa pellets, a bin of oats, or being grazed in the field. And the difference between enough and too much is often a matter of opinion. :)

While watching the sale, it occurs to me: do you think these bulls have had any grain (alfalfa, wheat, oats), etc?

Lot one sold for $50,000.

Frankie, it's about horses for courses. If you sell bulls in a market that demands growth tested bulls and sell in growth test sales then you obviously have to play that game to compete. My gripe against this is there is often inadequate selection pressure for do-ability.

I sell bulls that need to go and rough it out for 4 or 5 breeding seasons where there is seldom enough to eat, let alone being fed grain. For me it wouldn't make sense to push for maximum weight for day of age or even maximum ADG. That doesn't mean that I don't participate in performance testing, I even have two bulls in a growth test at the moment. I am more interested in their FCR and ultrasound scan results, but its nice to know how my genetics compare with the growth of those breeders who breed solely for that market.

I also compete in shows and offcourse those bulls aren't fed the same as those intended to go and work on the veld at 15 months old and I'll even admit that very few of them are harmed in any way by being fed a high energy ration for those 3 months prior to the show. The difference is every bull that is sold off the farm at some stage of their life had to prove that they can go and find food while still doing what they are intended to do, ie producing high quality beef out of lower quality forage.

The fact is I am selling more and more bulls to customers of those "serious" breeders who sends everything to a growth test and feed the rest out for maximum gain on the farm. Read into that what you want, but all I'll say is there is a reason for that.

Holden gain tests their bulls. This year's group gained 3.48 lbs. a day on a 132 day test. They were developed on a CHS Feeds ration called Bull Challenger. It is a "low energy, high fiber" pellet that Holden has used for the last 15 years(from their catalog).

8203 sold for $50,000 for 1/2 interest, 1/2 possession to:

Stuber Ranch
Harrell
Nunnally
Hoffmann (I don't know which one, yet!)
W4 Ranch
Churchill

Next high seller was 8141 @ $20,000 to Upstream, Dixon, and Spencer.

If I heard correctly, "jenran" got a 4140P son, 8248, at a very reasonable price.

Since I'm semi-boycotting LiveAuctions.TV, because of their subscription program and Brad's failure to even respond to me when I e-mailed and complained about it, I watched the sale this year on Superior and RFD-TV.

Ned, I was impressed with the extra thickness that the 320N sons had. Sure looks like you've got a good herd bull there!

I thought the "buy" of the sale was probably the 7250 bull @ $8000.

George

I don't think I'll be buying a 'forage' tested bull from Frankie-you have an interesting take on rations I must admit-I suppose icecream has fibre in Oklahoma lol.

What did the heifers bring? I missed them.

Anybody going to watch Coopers tomorrow? I'll be gone all day. I would like to know how they sell.

Sorry if that's too long.

George I was impressed with the 320N progeny that sold as well. There were a couple heifers I really liked out of him. I only caught the 2nd half, but IMO the LiveAuctions broadcast was as crappy as ever. It froze up a few times, video quality is poor, etc. I'll definitely not be paying that $50 again next year. I wish more Hereford breeders would look into DVAuction.Com--much better service there.

I can't believe that they actually have gotten people to pay the subscription! To me, it's like inviting the public to your place for a sale, then charging them $10 a head for the bar-be-que lunch you serve right before the sale. I wonder how THAT would go over!

Also, with a subscription, you open the door for more legitimate complaints when you have glitches and deliver poor quality video and audio. I started getting upset with liveauctions.tv at the Red Hills Dispersion. I hadn't gone to look at the cattle and was relying on them to provide a decent look at them in the ring. What I got instead instead was a half decent look at the ringman who had a knack of standing right in front of the cattle in the sale ring. When I and others, complained to Katie about it, she said there wasn't anything she could do about it. So I didn't buy anything, when I actually had several that sold within my budget at the time. Overall, the quality of their broadcast has diminished greatly from when they started.

Now, both DVAuction.com and EDJEcast.com have a superior broadcast AND format.

What upsets me most is the fact that Brad didn't even bother to respond to my e-mail. I've been involved in customer service based businesses for 35+ years and I consider that kind of behavior rude and unprofessional. He doesn't have to agree with me, but he should have at least acknowledged that he received my e-mail and "heard" my complaints.

I signed up the day of the NWSS Hereford Sale. I just really wanted to watch it and decided the subscription wasn't too bad at the time. That sale turned out pretty decent. But it seems like glitches, etc. have just been occuring more often and their duration longer. Anybody that watched the IL Beef Expo Hereford Sale knows what I'm talking about.

Also, with a subscription, you open the door for more legitimate complaints when you have glitches and deliver poor quality video and audio.

I definitely agree. I didn't complain when I was watching for free, but now that I'm a paying customer its pretty much my right to demand a quality product. Realistically, I'm probably not going to buy any cattle off the internet for a while, but someday I just might. But you better believe I will have a cell phone handy and will probably just call a sale phone instead of crossing my fingers that LiveAuctions won't freeze up while I bid.

Oh yeah, Brad quit responding to my emails as well.

Hi Everyone...

Yes George you are right ..... I did buy a 4140P son....#8248, at a very reasonable price. He was actually my pick of the 4140 sons because of his depth of body, length, structural correctness and he has lot's of pigment which was a priority for me this year.....I liked the 8223 son, who was really complete with lots of thickness...but not as much pigement and I would have lengthened him out some. The other son of 4140 I liked had NO pigment and went for 7000 (8154) Also liked a twin calf 8117 (?) but was reluctant because he was a twin. Overall the bulls were a very uniform set....hard to pick the best one ! Guess I got lucky and was able to afford the bull I wanted. :D

Does anyone know how 8069 and 8097 sold?

I've got 8069 selling for $6000 to Bill King and 8097 selling for $5000 to Carmichael.

I've got a question mark by the price ($2750) on the 8248 bull, sooknortex, as I wasn't paying that close attention until I heard that Jenkins in Alberta bought him. Perhaps jenran will confirm what they paid.

I'm just not as big a fan of the 4140P bull or his sire as a lot of other people are - meaning there's a number of Cooper/Holden bred bulls I like better. A lot of people fall in love with those goggle eyes, though.

I think you've done well

Sounds like a good sale. Hopefully the audio on tomorrow's sale at coopers will be good. I don't have too high of hopes after talking to a few people about liveauctions and what was posted on here. I like the dvauction format, never have watched edjecast. Saw one cattle in motion that was very good quality picture. Will be interesting to see. Jenran, congrats on your purchase. I think you will like the calves out of him.

Hi Everyone

George...your notes we right...I "stole" this bull at $2750.

Interesting comment about what is a "reasonable" price....I think that depends on the induvidual and what they are hoping to achieve in their breeding program. The reason I do not think it is nessisary to "brag" about what you paid for a bull is that this is not always a reflection of the true VALUE of a bull in your breeding program ..... or even in other's programs. Personally I know of a lot of bulls that sold for $50 000 or better that would have been steered at my place.....but that is not to say that at someone else's place they don't have genetic value.

Before I ever purcahse a bull I like to look at what my goal's are for the year regarding my breeding....what do I need to balance out ???? This year in part the answer to that question was pigment....without sacrificing other traits that are essential to me like muscling, correctness, and maternal strength. I have a number of bull customers that do "fall in love with those goggle eyes"....a number of them believe that this decrease's their pink eye problems.

Next I ask myself in regards to dollar value .....How much can I spend on this bull and still make a good return on what I invested....how many cows will I be able to breed him to ?, what can I expect to market his offspring for ?, will he contribute to the "investment" in my cow herd ? can I market some semen on him etc. ???

These questions for me determine what is a "reasonable" price FOR ME when buying livestock.

George...I am still thinking of AI'ing a bit.....out of interest what sires do you like better from Coopers/Holdens ? One of the drawbacks for me up here is that a lot of their sires are not collected for export here. I am always interested to know what other people like.

Well..enough of my rambling for this morning :D All in all I am excited about the bull I purchased ..... I feel I did get a real deal on him....FOR ME he is a bull that is worth 4-5 times what I paid for him (makes what I paid very "reasonable"). Will try and post some pic's once we get him home here.

I hope some of you will respond with your thought's on Cooper's sale today.

Jenran

Coopers averaged $6000 on 70 bulls, $55,000 top seller and $3283 on 15 heifers, $4500 top seller. The audio left a little to be desired, but nothing matches being in the seats. Worked for me havin to stay at home. Did miss a few buyer names though.

I did not have to pay a subscription fee to LiveAuctions to watch the Cooper sale. So what's the deal.
When I watched the video worked pretty good the auction parts was pretty smooth but many times I got a hiccup when they announced the buyer.
Question though, if you do not sign up can you still get access to watch on LiveAuctions?
