This is primarly for MS Vicky - In the response to C-Section you mentioned hiplock during extraction of the calf. I think we had this problem, with a Beefmaster cow, when we got the calf out it had really enlarged pelvic/hips. Would you explain this problem further and what causes it. The calf was dead - next day dam died.

Hiplock occurs when the calf's pelvis locks in the cow's pelvis, and sometimes can be relieved by twisting the calf sideways. It will break either the cow's or the calf's pelvis if traction is applied without regard to damage. Nerve damage (aka obturator paralysis even though it affects the sciatic nerve) is a common sequelae, even if the calf gets successfully removed. The calf can also get fractures lengthwise down it's femurs (long bone from hip to knee) from it also.

My apology Doc. Thanks for the quick response and explination. My neighbor who was helping with the extraction agrees it had to be hiplock.
