A STRONG trade for bulls -- underpinned by over 100 new members joining the Hereford Cattle Society during the last year -- marked the continuing resurgence of interest in the white-faced breed which sold to 3800gns at the society's autumn sale at Hereford Market last weekend.

Powys breeder Denis Jones again drew the highest bid. His 16-month-old bull Dendor 1 Virile weighed 738kg and is by Crickley 1 Amazon and out of a cow by Solpoll 1 Lionheart. Buyer was R Poulter of the Honeyhill herd, Isle of Wight.

The championship went to Leics breeders Ray and Rodney Westaway's Clipston Crusader. By Venture High Rise and a member of the winning group at the breed's national show, he was bought for crossing at 2000gns by M R Smith, Tamworth, Staffs.

R J Hutchings' Fisher 1 Victorious made 1900gns while the reserve champion -- Bosa 1 Vintage from G Blandford and Son -- made 1500gns to the Bransgore herd, Dorset.

A 1997-bred cow by Costhorpe 1 Destiny and suckling a heifer calf made 1100gns for Mrs C Fleming, Oxon. David Prothero, breed society chief executive, said: "A lively sale but we could have done with more females." (Brightwells).
