I read the link and believe the writer is a little off base. Herefords always have and always will be a intregal part of the cattle business.
You know we have flip flopped quite a bit over the years. We started with whatever we could get. We then made the move to BA. From BA we went, Charolais, Beefmaster, Limo, RA, Hereford, and back to BA. I currently run Red Angus, Baldies, Black Angus, Herefords, RA/Hereford X, Brangus, and just a couple Charolais. Right now the Hereford X and Char X are bringing the best prices here. Ours hit the ground big and square. The Hereford influence seems to be desired by our buyers. We first got away from the Herefords because they seemed to get pinkeye and cancer eye quite a bit down here in the sun. We still have some cancer eye victims now and then but we try to not keep a full white face. Seems like if the eye doesn't have white round it they do real well. Sort of like this little 3 month old.Frankie":kdiscuph said:You might want to get in the discussion at the link below:

Well, he does claim to be a long-time Hereford breeder. But I agree with you and thought some people on this board might want to jump into the discussion. Guess not....

Better sit down and have a strong drink Burro...me an you agree again.LOLCaustic Burno":vlq0xq2j said:I think the guy is nuts, the Hereford is a very efficient breed.
Herefords,Brammers and Angus are essential breeds or there crosses. Hats off to the Angus PR program, black hide does not cover poor cattle.

I would even hazard a guess that somewhere in the U.S. of A, in some small corner, someone thinks Angus is on the way down. That does not make it so.
Based on what I am seeing, hearing, and reading, I think that the future of Herefords is brighter than it has been in most of my lifetime.
Anecdotal evidence: Friends who are Hereford breeders are telling me that they can not keep up with demand. Mr. Day of Day Herefords, and his brother both sold completely out of bulls early on. Many of these were purchased by a very large, black-hided commercial operation. Flying G has sold all their bulls. Another friend- sold out. An uncle purchased his first Hereford this year after three Angus bulls straight. Commercial breeders who are putting a white face on their herds with our genetics, and intend to continue to do so in the coming years.
Also encouraging: The rise of popularity of bulls who are from carcass bloodlines, not showring.
Average prices for Hereford bulls have been increasing according to the sales digest records at HW. The report of straight Herefords outselling black baldies at OKC West in El Reno. Campground's similar story from Texas. I am seeing more Hereford influence in the pastures around here.
I want to suspect that a breeder whose bull market is drying up after 40some years in the business, needs to examine the direction he has been taking his program.
