We currently run all black cows with black bulls. However we are thinking about buying hereford cows because they are more affordable and running them with black bulls to get black whiteface calves. What does anybody think? Are bwf calves going to compete with all black calves at the salebarn? How will the calves grow?

keep black cows and get a good charolais bull and you will top the sales at the sale barn

Equivalent quality balck baldies will sell as well as all black calves in most places. With the money saved on buying the Herefords (That's good Herefords) buy a really good Angus bull, not just a black bull. No calving problems, some heterosis, and excellent replacement heifers.

Here in CA almost all the so called organic ranches use strictly Hereford/Angus because they are supposedly more resistant to diseases and sicknesses. And the black white-face brings as much if not more at the auctions. But, that's just in my area I don't know about your area.
