Although I have a lot of "friends" on the CT boards, I normally don't air out laundry on regular posts.

Family history is horrible for health problems. Three weeks ago a small lump appeared on my neck. Family doc gave me antibiotics and said come back in two weeks. when I went back he sent me to a ear, nose and throat specialist. Went this past Friday; he found a "growth" inside my mouth, close to the windpipe. Surgery scheduled this Thursday. Doc won't tell me anything, and that's worrying me the most.

Anyone else have/know of anyone who has gone through something like this? I had an uncle die from hotchkins - he was in his early 60's then (I'm only 39), and I can't say that I've slept well since this all started....

My family has a history of cancer, two aunts, my Dad. Mine hit early; I was only 28. They got it all out and I've been fine for lotsa years. But I can't say I blame you for worrying. Good luck and stay in touch.

Holy Crap! I don't understand why the doctor doesn't tell you what they are thinking it may be or what they are trying to rule out etc!!! I don't blame you for being worried/upset. Sure hope every thing comes out okay, will keep positive thoughts going your way. Luck be with you.

My thoughts exactly. There is no reason for that doctor not to tell you something! When you have to wonder, you can conjure up all kinds of scary things...that doctor ought to know that. Grrrrrrr!

Prayers are coming to you...please let us know.

Cypress that doesn't appear as dirty laundry one iota.

They'vve come a long way in their battle against cancer - if that is what it truly is.

Doctor probably isn't saying much cause it could be a lot of things. I understand your concern but keep a positive attitude because there are more chances that it is a minor thing than a major thing. So keep positive and remember our thoughts and prayers with you.

My aunt found a lump in her neck a couple years ago and had to get it removed. It turned out to be cancerous, but it was removed completely and she hasn't had any problems since, she just has to get a checkup on it a couple times a year. Your doctor probably doesn't want to speculate or worry you. Just try to think positive, even if it turns out to be a problem, just remember that you have the strength to get through it and family and friends to help you out. Good luck and hope it all turns out to be no problem!

Cypress, for whatever reason they go cutting in your throat, it is not the cancer or cyst or infection... that is immediately dangerous.
It is your airway, if something ruptures or becomes undone after surgery or after you leave hospital, it's over. What is the first aid for someone bleeding in their throat?
Don't let them downgrade anything in your throat to routine day surgery status.

Don't let your mind worry until you know for sure, if it turns out bad don't play with yokel doctors get your ass to M.D. Anderson in Houston.

Right on track CB. If it's bad stuff, go to the doctors that do this every day. Get away from the locals and go to the professionals.

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes, it means more than you know. And for those of you that know me, I don't say that lightly. I think the doc is just keeping mum until he knows for sure. He, along with another surgeon, will be doing the procedure. I'm always the optomist, so I naturally look for the brighter side. I've done a lot of soul searching lately - and if and when I do come out of this I really think I'll be a better person for it. So many things that a person takes for granted until it might not be there. That won't happen in the future, however long I have. Like Kenny Chesney says, everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to go now.

Caustic, I've heard great things about M.D. Anderson. Lady Bird Perkins Cancer center here in Baton Rouge has gotten some really good reviews as well. If it does turn out to be for the worse, I won't play around - I'll fight like the worst Brangus you ever saw. I have three kids and a wife that are depending on it. How do you explain to a 4 year old these types of things. You don't really, but my 13 and 11 year old are all too aware of what's going on. We lost my 11 year old's best friend's dad about 6 months ago to lukemia. He went to M.D., but lukemia is so ruthless... I grew up with his wife from when I was a kid. Words cannot comfort or express the feelings that you want to convey to someone who's not even 35 and just lost her husband.

Thanks again for the well wishes. I go in Thursday for the surgery, but they tell me that it will take three to five days for the biopsies to come back. So maybe early next week I'll get some good news.

Don't borrow trouble-- most things Drs check out are not cancer.
Coast on this one till you hear different- I have been thru something like this twice now- both came back non cancerous.

the odds are in your favor.

Try not to worry and I know that is so much easier said than done .You will continue in my prayers . So many times I've seen people at church that were facing difficult circumstances, kneel at the alter and we come out of the pews and lay our hands on them and pray for them and time and time again I've seen God honor those prayers . Rest assured my friend that many at CT are praying for you and that God hears those prayers .

If you worry yourself about it now, then you might have worried needlessly, or twice. Either way, that first set of worries didn't do anything but make you lose sleep. I had a knot on my neck when I was 12 and it was nothing. I also had a hysterectomy when I was forty when the doc suspected something wasn't right. I don't particularly have a history of cancer in my family. Heart desease, yes, but not cancer.

Just get it taken care of and let us know. And good luck to you. You will be remembered here in our prayers.

As for the kids, I just told mine that I was going to the hospital for an operation and that everything would be fine when they got all those extra parts removed.
