HELP.....................Steer ate 50 lbs of oats

Help Support CattleToday:

watch the steer real close cause he may well founder on u. That means he will go lame from eating so much feed. What we do with horses is feed them some mineral oil so they can pass the feed quickly. Try giving him some mineral oil. and if he does go lame call your vet and ask him what he recommends. I dont know the age or weight of the calf. Good luck.

He is 3 month old steer that weighs 300 pounds. I will try the mineral oil. THANKS

It's pretty much impossible for him to have eaten 50 pounds by himself at that weight.

If the oats are light bushel weight, he will be fine. Calves are fed straight oats as creep feed. He might scour a bit.

If the oats are heavy bushel weight he will at the least scour and perhaps get shipping fever (pneumonia).

You'll know within 24 hours if he is seriously sick or not.

Jason is right. There should be no problem. Oats can be fed free choice. One can always have a unique individual, or an exception.>
