Hello from Deep East Texas

Help Support CattleToday:

First cool spell is here…getting down in the 30's overnight. Found out a local feed store has cubes about 88 cents cheaper than Tractor Supply…I'll buy there as long as that is the case - I'd rather buy local anyway. The girls haven't put much of a dent in the 2 bales of hay I put out 2 or 3 weeks ago. I guess they are going to stick with the grass as long as it holds out. There's still a good bit to be had for this late in the year…but I ain't gonna complain.

I think they produce the Lonestar cubes (Black Bag) in Nacodoches. I would think you could find a bag of them cheaper than TSC and they are a lot better quality. My cows are going through hay, liquid feed, and mineral at a steady pace. 4 calves on the ground as of yesterday.

we rotated the cattle on to the hay pastures since the grass was good and it's really too late to try to bale what is left, they seem to keep their heads stuck in the grass rather than the pasture. Getting some cold nights here too, we're about 75 miles north of Nagcodoches. Got 1 small hay meadow left to turn them on then back to the pasture they go and after a few weeks rest it seems to be coming back a bit so it will probably be a couple of weeks before we put much hay out. It was a good year for hay here so we have a lot,We were blessed

I'm giving them cubes a couple of times a week. As for the hay, they are eating some but are staying on the grass more. Last couple of weekends, I let them in a hayfield and they stayed with it until I drove through with some cubes. Annual rye is starting to come up in the hay pastures and the coastal Bermuda is going dormant. I'm thinking they'll start hitting the hay harder over the next week or two. And we've got plenty of that this year…a good year for hay.

Cleared some limbs, leaves, and mud out of a couple of culverts this afternoon. When I finished, I walked up stream to the dam of one of the ponds. Beavers had started building right on the spillway…again. Had to tear that down, too. Sigh

Tyler area?

We have been on full hay for about 2-3 weeks. Ground is lightly snow covered and ground is frozen (not very deep yet). Hopefully, we get frozen down 1-2 feet this winter. Last winter, we were lucky to have 1-2 INCHES "some" of the times thru the winter. Makes for a miserable winter. MUD non stop.

Yesterday at work, I brought a tractor that had been repaired around to the customer. Used my keys ( I have one for every piece of equipment on the place)…we let them load their own equipment on their own trailers so they can load it like they want. Left my big bundle of keys in the ignition (doh!)…didn't realize it until the guy was gone. It was quite a chore getting that set of keys together so that was a major bummer. The guy brought them to the shop while I was out picking up a lawn mower for repair. Now the keys are safely back where they belong - with yours truly…guess there's hope for the world after all. That made my day. Sometimes the little things are really big things.

Just started putting out hay last week.
Just got back from putting out hay over at my fishing partner hay man's.
He has been in the hospital for a week.

Been looking like the dead of winter for a couple months except the trees are still in leaf. Maybe had 3 inches of rain in the past 5 months. Been supplementing water starved grass with hay for a couple months.

I don't know for sure, but it seems like the best way to insure a supply of rain is to have an ocean or forest/grasslands to the west. Not much of that west of Texas as far as I know.

Temp expected to get up to 80 today…very nice outside at the moment…if you don't mind the humidity.

Had a bit of a surprise…one of the heifers retained from a previous bull a couple of years ago sprang an early bird bull calf on us. Wouldn't have minded if she had waited another month or so…oh well…not complaining. It's her first calf and she is being a good momma…baby is maybe a day or two old here.
