Hello from Deep East Texas

Help Support CattleToday:

Give him time -- like 45-60 days to see if he walks out of it. Had a yearling bull this year with a bum knee swelled up as big as a volleyball. At 45 days he was barely putting any weight on it. Then a big abscess blew out and within a few days he was walking on it and a week later barely had a limp. Turned him out on cows right on time 60 days after he got hurt.
We're going to see how he responds to the dex…it will probably feel good to tame down any inflammation

So how was your 1st day on the new job?
Much better than the school district. A yard full of John Deere equipment next door to a McCoy's Lumber Co…if there was gun shop on the other side, it would be testosterone nirvana…lol…laid back staff (no 41 year old spoiled brats to deal with)…I show up in the morning and whatever I see that needs to be done, I do…no micromanagement…perfect for me…I know how to clean up a place whether on the grounds or in the shop and I can keep myself busy all day long…the perfect general flunkie position for somebody like me in post- retirement. And less than 15 minutes from the house…8-5, Mon. - Fri…maybe an occasional Saturday. So far, everyone has been easy to get along with…actually look forward to going to work…finished day 2 today…washed down 3 pieces of equipment, unloaded 2 trucks, cleared out a bunch of empty boxes and pallets, started cleaning up around the waste oil tank, prepped the weed eater for tomorrow morning, and did a hundred little miscellaneous things…all in all, a good day. Oh, and finished about a million online safety videos…as per corporate. Ready to rock another day. Thanks for asking.

Bush hogged some of the grazing pastures that were sprayed first. Keeping the deck high enough to cut the dead weeds but not interfere with the grass. Those areas look much better. Didn't see the bull…hopefully tomorrow when I mow a couple of other small areas. Grass is trying to come back from the army worms…got a decent shower yesterday…just didn't last long enough. Supposed to have a small chance one day late next week…here's hoping.

Saw the bull today…hardly a limp at all…and showing interest in the girlls (he has been and remains quite the Romeo - probably would have bred the cats if he could have gotten to them…lol)…swelling has gone down considerably…pastures looking good…just need that rain to hurry up and get here

Your new job will let you stop in (just around the corner) on your way home on Thursdays to catch the tail end of the calf sale. I worked for one of the owners grandfather at the old Patton Auction barn south of town back in the 1970's before Nacogdoches Livestock Exchange was built.

What will you do with the Angus bull you got to replace him?
Told the guy about the improvement and he offered to just cancel the deal since he had not yet cashed the check…we've bought several bulls from them over the years…the current bull came from their farm…right before they switched from brangus to angus

Good rain shower yesterday but short. Two good showers today…second one still going…I thought I could hear the grass growing when I stepped out onto the patio.

Washed out a round baler that had been traded in yesterday. The previous owner was the same guy who did some fence work for me last year. This thing didn't look like it had been cleaned out in a long time - grass and dirt just caked up all over the place…shiny clean now though.

The missus and I taking a little weekend trip this weekend…30th anniversary…and she hasn't smothered me with a pillow…yet.

Everything mowed that can be mowed. Cleaned up a few more large limbs that fell in the recent rains...that's an ongoing battle around here. Took some cubes to the cows this AM and the bull actually came trotting up to get his fair share...much better looking than a couple of weeks ago...seemed more like his old self...most of the swelling has gone down and there is no noticeable limp now.

Had to make several attachment changes today as there were several jobs that needed doing...all changes went smooth as silk...must be living right. Pastures looking clean and green and a good hay cutting is probably just around the corner (2 or 3 weeks)...hay pastures coming back strong from the July army worm attack. Cows looking fat & sassy. All in all, I would call it a good day.

Incidentally, 30 yrs. + 1 day with the missus.

Back to work tomorrow...seems like I work more on my days off...pretty much been the norm for several years now...oh, well...keeps my mind and hands busy...I'm not very good at sitting still...drives me up the wall to not have something to do...it's even worse when I have things to do but can't because of bad weather...but not going to complain about rain in July-August...it has been a welcome relief. Hay pastures look a whole lot better than they did at this time last year...very few weeds and very little Johnson grass...no sign of fall army worms...yet.

Time to go back to work and rest up 😁

Just heard something outside. Went to check and we are getting yet another good shower. Man, I love that smell (petrichor, I think is what the smell associated with rain is called). These showers are supposed to be moving out over the next few days…but it's good to see now. Last year around this time, you couldn't buy a rain drop.

Another good shower today - not pouring down but a good steady semi-light rain. Another chance tomorrow then a few days of sunshine. Some overnight lows in the forecast dipping into the upper 50's. Fall is coming on fast. Hay pastures looking great…the chicken litter coupled with the spraying looks like it's going to pay off with a very nice second cutting…must be some truth to the idea that if you're going to pray for rain, you should prepare your fields to receive it. Haven't seen these hay pastures looking this good for quite a few years. The girls will be well fed this winter.
