Has anyone worked with the USDA on building a Heavy use area and a Manure containment system. The heavy use area is an area in the winter that the cows stay in so they do not harrow the pastures when they are not growing and wet.

It is part of the USDA Equip program.

Check with some dairys. There were a couple of them that did it around here.

We have particpated in the EQIP program with two heavy use areas placed around the water troughs. The district conservationist specifies the amount of gravel needed and we placed the gravel on top of geotextile fabric supposedly to stop the gravel from sinking into the ground. The cattle will walk farther to drink from the trough than to drink from the nearby pond.
