Heat Cycle

I gave a heifer 5ml of lutalyse on Monday mid-afternoon, in an attempt to force a heat cycle. Last evening, Wednesday approx. 7:30 some 48 hrs. after the injection, I noticed that she had a clear string and was trying to mount everything short of the barn cats. Against my better judgement I bred her, but I am now questioning if this was a true heat cycle? Your opinions are greatly appreciated.

Probably was. May not have been a fertile heat though. Keep an eye on her and see what happens in 17-21 days

>Heat will typically occur in the 36 to 48 hour range. I think you're ok with breeding her. I gave a heifer 5ml of lutalyse on

>You were doing the right thing by breeding her at that time. Jumping everything in sight is a definite sign of being in heat. She responded to the Lutylise in the proper time period. As long as you bred her properly you have a 70 - 75% chance of her being bred. Cows that have been in heat less than 7 days before giving this shot will not respond. It is necessary to wait 10 days before trying a second shot. By using this 2 shot approach last year, I settled 12 out of 14 in 14 days of AI. It works and is well worth the time. Watch her again starting at about day 18 or 19. Heifers tend to cycle a day ot two quicker than adult cows.
