Healthcare in Australia.

I happened on this article in Vox on Australia 's Healthcare. Closely similar to Medicare now except we have no public hospitals. The closest to me would be Parkland in Dallas.

We have been negatively effected by the loss of not for profit hospitals which have now been bought up by for profit medical corporations.

There was a day when some insurance companies were not for profit, like Blue Cross Blue Shield. That has changed also.

All I know is that healthcare is a broken mess in this country right now.

The poor get healthcare for free. The middle class pays out the nose for insurance (or is fined for not having it), which at best amounts to a moderate discount once you bend over and pay that deductible. These insurance companies don't care about anyone, and will find any option or loophole to opt out of coverage.

We shouldn't have people rationing or dying because of insulin cost. We shouldn't have people filing bankruptcy because of an unexpected illness. Lifesaving things like epi-pens should not cost what they do.

I know it's not as simple as healthcare for all. But something needs to be done, this system is bull butter.

Australia does have one of the best systems in the world but we don't have the population to support like most countries. If you have private health, roughly $2000 a year an adult, you can get treatment by who you want when you want. If not you go to the public system and it is free but you have to go on waiting lists. I prefer private health because i have seen some cock ups in the public system first hand. The major failure here is the remote Aboriginal communities, there is a lot of complicated issues out there but it seem what you don't see doesn't matter to the system.

Well said and pretty well sums it up. Mine is not health insurance really just bankruptcy protection for oh s#@t that's bad problems. I had great hopes they would fix that for us but no luck so far.

Our healthcare is a socialist type system, but it is one I agree with, although I am generally more for freedom and less government and business....

You can have money, and then go broke, and you will not be tossed out down here.

It does somewhat depend on where you live too, in more affluent suburbs, you will find less doctors (GP) that will accept the govt payment, in blue collar areas, there is healthcare for those that need it.

I wont cite my personal experience, but, I will say, there is little point to paying for own cover, that is how good the public system is, and many doctors are still with the basic conscience that healthcare is something that should be provided without prejudice, but there is some slimy buggers who are all about business and wont treat those who do not have cash too splash, they are the minority though.

The mindset is that without this type of cover, it can cost more too when people get to a stage that they must be cared for, they are not productive, and cost the tax payer, people are not allowed to die on the streets here as a general gist of the system. You cant get your fake boobs, fake pearly whites, or whatever on the public teat though, only serious, basic, health needs.
