I have more cattle this year than in recent time and have a 5 acre hay field that I have baled in the past and am on the fence about keeping it in hay or running it as pasture ground this summer. Due to drought conditions it was only cut once last year and yielded 16 6' by 6' rounds. It cost be $285 to have it custom baled last year. I can by the same size rounds from my neighbor straight from the field for $30. Thoughts, ideas, suggestions? Thanks

I'd rather buy extra hay for winter than to run out of pasture in the summer. But I'm sure all scenarios are different.

Well, mathematically, you are almost doubling the cost of those hay bales to gain pasture for maybe 2 pairs, or a few more stockers?
Is it already fenced for pasture with water available?
One of those "juice worth the squeeze deals".

Yes the ground is already fenced with water. Before our numbers increased I was able to graze into January on stockpiled fescue and was hoping having these additional 5 acres as pasture would enable me to do the same again which would also limit my need for winter hay.
