can't seem to find the estimated protien value for wheat & oats anywhere. going to try and cut some of both for hay and don't know whether to combine it w/corn & supplement, or is supplement needed given the protien &'s in feeding straight as hay to cows/calves.
The protien in wheat/oat hay is highly variable depending on soil fertility, fertilizer application and timing, and stage the crop is cut at. The greener and earlier in development it is cut the higher the protien. I have seen as high as 16%. Leave the grain to develop somewhat and the fiber increases and protien can drop as low as 8%.
Best bet is to formulate a plan and then test the forage after harvest to see the actual results.
