Hay preservative

Help Support CattleToday:

Have used many different kinds, finally gave up on it. In our conditions 'here' it just never seemed to be reliable and worth fooling with. The Pioneer stuff seemed to work the best out of what we tried. Not saying it won't work for you it just didn't for us. We are putting up hay for dairy cattle mostly and while it kept it from spoiling it never fed well according to the dairymen.

Generally our summers are very dry, the only rain from late May-Sept is thunderstorms, we wanted to use the preservative to get hay put up a day early if it looked like a thundershower might kick up. We generally bale at 10-15% moisture, with the preservative we were hoping to get 20-22% without damage. Could only safely bale to 18% or so with the stuff. That wouldn't gain us an extra day anyway so it wasn't worth it. Daytime humidity is usually around 10% so another day would allow it to dry enough anyway, sans rain. This was also in 3x4x8' square bales. That said a few guys use it and seem to do better, it is hard for us to keep it going on 4 balers all the same rate, etc.

One guy here locally just has a tank 15 gallon or so,pump, switch and two nozzles that spray into the pickup head on a round baler. Would that actually work??
