Good luck, we got an additional 19 acres to cut nd bale at our neighbors and we planned on doing it this coming week but I'm not sure hey can get the tractors in there. There was a big storm yesterday and looks like another for the ranch tonight

The first ground I dropped was very clover heavy and should have dried a 5th day before baling. Getting temps between 110 and 120 after 11 days. Had to be the stem moisture. Bales have squatted just a little bit. Got the problematic 16 bales in the barn with 4 inches between each.

How long does it take them to get scary hot if they're going to?

If you are at 11 days you are probably ok. I believe there can be another secondary heat cycle later.

I've always heard 3-5 weeks. But that's just hearsay. I know of one barn that burned a few years ago that was 8 weeks post baling, but I know for fact the hay was probably 70% red clover

its pretty hard to get a bale to catch on fire.. you have to really make it soaking wet. i've baled some very very wet alfalfa and it cured fine. fermented a little but other than that it was some good feed. if some are wet i'll leave them out with spacing in the sun .. usually within a week they are dried out and fine.

That settles my mind a good bit. I really liked baling with thr soft core new idea. Seemed real forgiving.

Haying red clover is the only situation that makes me have negative opinions on the forage.

This barn belongs to someone else, so just being extra paranoid. I've got thermometers everywhere. 😆

since I unroll every bale. I added the variable core option on my JD baler. Still packs a nice tight bale but gives just the right amount of air to cure the bale better and allow you to unroll.

I've said it a million times I hate baling clover. Really the only way to do it is to wrap the bales. Clover can be tedded and flipped everyday for 2 weeks around here and still be 30+% moisture and turn into a slimey moldy mess.

One hay barn fire I am familiar with gave off a clue. The day before the smoke popped out, there was an odd smell in the air - even hundreds of feet away. Like what is that smell? Next day, it was obvious where the smell was coming from. So he started spearing the bales and moving them out in the hay field. Flames grew when the bales were picked up. But they seem to burn forever until they are broken apart so that they can burn up. A mess to deal with.

Can that be put on an 8 series baler? I use a 458. I've considered finding a New Idea 4845 or 4855 to replace it with. Not sure the sizes new idea did make. Our 4844 makes too small a bale. Too many trips feeding.

yes. just tell them you want the variable valve kit. easy to put on. then you have to change your monitor settings *instructions tell you how

We had some rye grass hay a few years back that I think would have caught fire 🔥. Wanted to get them in the barn pretty quick after we baled it because it was so good . Normally we leave it in the field for 7-10 days . Went by the hay barn and got an odor of something burning. Touch a bale and it was hot but ran my hand in between two as far as I could and it almost burned me . Got the tractor and started taking them out of the barn . Some were smoking! We wound up losing around 70 rolls . Never again .
