Hay Barn Design

Anybody who claims that any bale stored outside "stays just as good" as inside barned stored hay is dillusional. Ha.

Something sitting out in the rain/snow/sun/wind/soil/etc simply can not retain the same quality as something protected from those elements. I don't care if we are talking a hay bale, piece of lumber, or a car the outside elements simple degrade things.
@chevytaHOE5674, it'll depend alot on how much "weather" you'll experience. Way different conditions in Wyoming, or New Mexico, than what you'll experience in the UP of Michigan.

It doesn't matter where you live. The outside elements weather everything and it degrades. The degree at which that happens changes based on where you are but it does happens everyplace.
Yup... agreed. The soil health movement here has a program called "Soil Your Undies"... the idea is that you take a brand new pair of cotton underwear, and bury 'em in your soil, and mark the spot. Come back in 6 months and dig 'em up, and see what's left of 'em. If your soil is highly biologically active, you'll have nothing much left but that elastic band. If you've got whole undies left, or if they're only slightly eaten up, you're "middlin". Our goal is to have soil that's very biologically active... which means it'll eat up alot of "residue" (hay that's set on it), and FENCE POSTS too! (So I use fiberglass posts!). Another reason to be using "bale rails" as well! So you are 100% correct Chevy.

True but the degree at which it degrades can and will vary greatly. For example the guy I bought bulls from in Western Washington said on his place T posts rotted of at the ground in about 10 years. But he gets 100 inches of rain a year and at high tide you can stand in the corner of his pasture and throw a rock into salt water. He asked his FIL who lives in a very dry part of eastern Washington how long T posts last. FIL said I don't know, the first one we put in still looks great. So 10 years versus 100+ years. That is a bit of an extreme example but a real one.

what about chicken house trusses I am suppose to pick up enough trusses and the metal for the top (yes all is used but in good shape) to build a 40 x 70 for 7000.00 and got a guy that will put it up for me for 3000.00. The trusses come with a 6' leg but I have a lot of 6'' pipe so I am planning on making it 14 ' tall . I will still have to buy some C purlin for the top. Most people set the trusses at 10 I think I may go 12 with a 4'' C purlin 3' spaced

I'd check around for the prices of new one...that price is getting up there on used material.and don't go further than 10 ft….

I hit the wrong key it is 6000.00 for a 40 x 70 trusses and tin for top. I called one of the bigger suppliers to check on the 4'' c purlins and told him what I could get and price and he told me there was no way he could get close to that price ??? What are you thinking I should be able to get one for? Maybe someone on here builds them and can comment. I was thinking I would have some wheres around 11k in it when done. That is me buying everything and using the 6'' pipe I already have. that is no sides and some time down the road i would close up 3 sides.

recently listed a guy has (80) 4/12 40' trusses (chicken barn) for 300 each. metal sheeting to cover it for 30 ea. hope this helps.

heres another listing.

what you're doing is a good way to get a nice hay building done for pretty cheap.

I've got a bunch of those trusses I bought a while back, the only issue is on a lot of them the side leg is only 7' tall so you either have to build a "knee wall" to get them up to the height you want when you set them or weld extensions on the legs unless you don't mind the roof being low

yea my neighbor bought some and welded some extensions on and made it 16'.

I was going to do that but I was concerned about the bending and twisting as you set them. I helped a friend do it on a set of knee walls he put down each side and it was pretty easy. I've had them sitting for a few years now and am going to build with them this year

The old one we had was 8ft on a 3 sided, 3 block high wall.
I only have an open, mid sized tractor so the roll bar is only 9ft tall.
New one was put up on telephone poles. Plenty high now.

Need to look at one for animals now.... thinking about selling 75% cows, just keeping a few mowers. Then harvesting the fowl, just keep enough for eggs. Then try milking in the future... I like the punishment I guess.

I found a much better deal , going to have to drive 3 hrs but getting a43x70 for 3400.00 bigger and 2600.00 cheaper. Yes 6ft legs but I have a bunch of 6 inch pipe and 6 inch H beam so. I am making it 12 ft. Tall
