In need of what to get ground to start graining two steers to get them ready for market. Want to get a mixture at about 12% . ? oats / Corn soy meal ??? How much of each per ton??

How big/weight are your steers? If they have already been backgrounded and are ready for finishing ration, than straight corn at 9% protein is sufficient. Along with good grass hay. A steer weighing about 700# should only need about 9% protein. At this point, you are finishing - not growing. You need protein to grow muscle & bone. Now is you are talking a weaned calf, than you should feed at 12%. Unless you are mixing your own feed, just ask the feed mill to balance a corn/oat/soy meal ration for 12%. What has worked for me for years. It seems to finish cattle, lambs and work for ewes. I do feed a higher protein to growing lambs but this is what I keep in the bulk tank. For 1 1/2 T. feed 2100 lb corn 600 lb oats 200 lb soybean meal 100 lb molasses(wet in fall/winter/spring, dry in summer) 10 lb mineral 7.5 lb Ammonium chloride 7.5 lb ADEK
