How big/weight are your steers? If they have already been backgrounded and are ready for finishing ration, than straight corn at 9% protein is sufficient. Along with good grass hay. A steer weighing about 700# should only need about 9% protein. At this point, you are finishing - not growing. You need protein to grow muscle & bone. Now is you are talking a weaned calf, than you should feed at 12%. Unless you are mixing your own feed, just ask the feed mill to balance a corn/oat/soy meal ration for 12%.
