grazing pecan orchards
what type of grasses or forages would yall recommend . Iam resurrecting an old pecan orchard that is full of weed . for cows

I assume the trees are still producing? I'm asking because occasionally a cow will develop a taste for pecans and won't hardly eat anything else. They'll get thin quick if that happens.

It may not become a problem, but I thought you should be aware of it (if you weren't already) so you could look out for it

Is your goal to raise cattle or pecans? What you do for one is antagonistic to the other. Pecan specialists recommend clean orchard floors to make harvest easier.

A&M says the animals should be out of the orchard 45 days before harvest so you can conceivably shred, but there's definitely some additional management required. Not to mention you have to be extremely selective about what fungicides and insecticides you spray on your trees. I can only think of two or three fungicides without grazing restrictions and they're pricey.
