I have two black angus heifers with a single gray smoke ring on their neck or side. It has not gone away on pasture. It does not look like ring worm. Is this a genetic thing, or do I have some skin disease?

We have a cow and use to have a bull that had one... Kinda neat.

I read somewhere-can't remember where- those gray hair rings on Angus cattle are called 'Jock marks' in honor of one of the first Angus bulls, Old Jock, sired by Gray Breasted Jock. Old Jock, born in 1842, was assigned # "1" in the Scotch Herd Book.

I had one that had an actual ring in the shape of an oval. No skin lesions or any signs of ringworm. Never went away, regardless of whether she was slick 'n shiny in summer or full-on winter coat.

Just a white hair defect that can show up in any cattle, from a million different things. I have one black cow that has one that goes all the way around here neck.
