Texan,
I am not on RETIREMENT Social Security. If you think there is only one type of Social Security and its Retirement, It is a good evidence you are truly misinformed are poorly verse in your news education. Your lack of knowledge for things far and beyond your nose explains a lot why you support Bush! Anyways, I am on SOCIAL SECURITY INCOME or know as SSI. Look under Disability and SSI on their website: http://www.ssa.gov/ I am in their Ticket to Work Program that Bill Clinton has created!

I understand exactly what you're talking about. But, the truth is that if it wasn't for people who pay their FICA tax money into the Social Security Administration, you wouldn't have any money to draw. You would either have to force yourself to work in spite of all of your "disabilities" or you would be on some other type of government handout.

You can brag about the origin of your check being SSI if that makes you feel better about yourself, but you can't change the fact that it is a HANDOUT courtesy of those of us that work for our living. And apparently we work for your's, too!

Texan I couldn't agree more as I have paid in to SS for 35 years ( the max every year) for leaches. Now that I'm approaching retirement the government doesn't know if there will be enough to last. I don't mind paying my taxes if it went to our service men in wages, but leaches on society is hard to take. This is why most democracies don't last longer than 200 years. The lazy figure out they can vote people in that will pay their way until the system colapses.

Come on guys. Isn't this a bit like shooting fish in a barrel. I don't agree with alot of what GP says but I'm also not a believer on picking on the handicapped. Its just not sporting. I can tell you from personal experience that if you have health problems that it can be a very hard climb to get yourself into a job that you can do and that you enjoy. However if GP has a physical disability, then education has to be the key to getting him back to work and if a person has an attitude where they want to go through the process, I have no problem with my tax money giving them a hand up. However, I don't agree with the status quo. GP if you are able to operate a keyboard, go get some training and get a job doing something with computers. Living in a small town is no excuse. Alot of courses are available online and I'll bet the government has some sort of program to help you get started. As i said on another post, a disability is all in how you handle it, you have a choice to be a victim or pick up the pieces you have and do your best with them. Many people on welfare are depressed, I think that it comes from not having enough to keep them busy.

CRR, I hate to disagree with you. You Canadian guys should be our in-house experts on paying to support a welfare class. There are many degrees of handicaps. We all have some. If I tell you about mine will you send me a check?

GP demonstrates a stamina for staying at his keyboard and for watching TV and posting about it. A lot of people who feel that they should pull their weight with a job force themselves to do it without that much stamina. And many of them can't afford the keyboard or TV! I just believe that many of the bums could find work if they wanted to.

As for shooting fish in a barrel, I have more respect for the fish than the bums. So, no. I wouldn't be in favor of shooting the fish. But the bums.....?

Hang tough Texan, you're right on the money. Cattle Rack must have been having a bad day because I sure wouldn't have expected him to take that stance either. You hit the nail on the head in this thread, also in the locked thread.

I don't think we're very much at odds on this issue at all. Our taxes up here are heavy. The rich pay up to 51% on income tax above a certain amount. But, without knowing the nature of GP's ailment... By the way he types, he could be severely handicapped. Also, he is young and pretty immature. I choose to ignore most of his opinions as I would any person who has never experienced life outside of their parents home. Still, I would rather pay for 2 years of education (if thats what it takes) with the hope that he will become a productive member of society, than pay for a lifetime of early retirement or disability (whatever he wants to call it). As I said the status quo is not acceptable.

I really can't even imagine us being at odds on this issue. And I'm sure you're right when you say that we aren't.

As for paying for two more years of education, read some of that drivel again! I don't feel very good about the 12 years we've already paid for! Do you think the taxpayer has made a sound investment?

I agree with you on one thing for sure. The status quo is not acceptable. If two years will generate a taxpayer in place of a taxsucker (I made a new word ;-) ), I'm all for it. It would obviously be a good investment. I just have serious doubts about that working in this case. And many, many others, I'm sure. That would require the individual to have a certain ambition and drive for it to work. I just don't see it here!

Well, that makes some sense. I don't mind the government helping out those who truly need it. However, it should be 1) for citizens only, 2) temporary and not a way of life, and 3) amortized and paid back. If a citizen opts to receive assistance, then as long as they are on the dole – or have not paid back 100% of the assistance – they should not be able to vote.

Further, if a citizen is not paying taxes they should not be able to vote.

Agree 100%. Of course that would be against their rights and you know how loud those socialist activists are. Seems like things run alot more on the 'squeaky wheel' principle than pure democracy.

Talk about double edged swords. If we take them off the dole the crime rate goes up and we pay to keep them in prison. As for not voting unless you pay taxes, I think that was tried after the war between the states, it was called a Poll Tax. That isn't kosure either.
I think the carrot and stick approach is the best method of handling the welfare (expletive deleted). All they get now is the carrot, time for the stick!

You speak 'em truth, Chief Dun. Funny you mention the poll tax. Nowadays the liberals have everybody thinking that was one of the horrible crimes in our past.

I didn't say it didn't.

I don't think you can make a blanket statement and call ALL of them leaches. There are those people that have worked well into their 50's then have a stroke, or some other injury, and can no longer work, but are short of retirement age. On the other hand, I agree, there are the leaches that found a good attorney.............

Thanks Goatlady for correcting me...it is, indeed, called Supplemental Security Income... I was a bit ticked off by the very personal insults Texan and a few others have said.
Nah, computers isn't my things. Sitting in front of the computer makes me depress...I am an up and go type of guy. If I was not disabled, I would not be sitting here telling you this... I don't get much out of SSI, just enough to cover the cost of living, and pay the monthly bills. Y'alls on here have the extra earnings that I don't get....most of you on here got a fancy, schmacy new truck with A/C in it, a nice house and property...livestock..everything I dream of! I don't sit around all day on my ass...I do get up and do something......anything including doing dishes (yuck). Don't worry my VR (Vocational Rehabilitation) counselor and my family said I should go into computers but it is not my interests. Do me a favor (this is a problem for all type of people), loook in your classified ads and count how many jobs is willing to train a person....most of the jobs wants previous experiences.....even McDonalds does! I will not embarrass myself with an low ending jobs like McDonalds or grocery store as a bagger. I did find one employer that is willing to train me (whoo hoo!).... even if I do get hire and start working again, it does not mean I am off Social Security (thank God because I need the medical insurance!). If I make more than (I think) 2,000 a month from work, I am off SSI but I am forever in your system because I will still on Medicaid (unless an employer is willing to buy medical insurance for me and his/her other employees..ALL businesses great or small should have medical coverage for all employees!). For two years, I have filled out applications for jobs (including move to another state in hope to increase my chances to find a job and it worked!) but too many employers are too chickenshit to hire any disabled persons (remember all the lawsuits against Walmart on discriminations on disabled people?) I want you do another favor for me? Go to numerous of busineeses (I don't care which ones) and count how many disabled people are working... You will find a very small percentage that are working. I once read in an article that about 70 % of disabled people on SSI DO want to work! If you don't like disabled people sitting on your tax dollars, HIRE THEM! You will still have to pay your taxes on them anyways! So whats the difference? anyone out there willing to hire me and provide training (and one month rent free)?
Yes I am getting an education (mentioned this a dozen times), I spent five years in community college, I am on my first year in University... I plan to major in Agribusiness but after hearing from many rude people on here, I will change it!
Oh yes, it is true I don't pay any taxes it is because the GOVERNMENT has already done it...what i get monthly is for the cost of living adjustments..pay rent (no I don't live with my parents, I haven't lived with them since I was 19), pay bills, buy groceries, etc....) I have learned to save my money wisely therefore I could afford an computer and internet connection... It is not enough, I don't make an yearly earnings like most of you have.....i am well under the $10,000 a year bracket.
I didn't want to share all this information but if I didn't, you would be on my ass for months on end about it...
BTW, when I moved to Oregon, my agent asked if I want to be on food stamps....what was my answer? No. Because there is families (lazy or not) that have kids and they need it more than I do...it also save YOUR tax dollars on me... See? I am courteous enough.

There's a relatively simple cure for your depression. Not surprised that it escapes you.

Sounds to me like you don't just get assistance. We provide you with everything you need to live. What a deal!!!

Are you saying that the biggest handicap that keeps you from working is your embarrassment? Is that a new medical condition? Do you want us to provide you with treatment for it? Just more proof that your sorry ass doesn't have the desire to work. Most of us do things that we don't really want to because its the responsible thing to do.

greenpasture78":3w0wnxdf said:

I would love to have some of that. Can't afford it. Wish I could even provide some for my wife, but can't afford that, either. Its just too high. Maybe freeloaders and bums have something to do with that?

Sounds like the only source of income you have is from us, the taxpayers. Yet, you can afford luxury items that you refuse to use to provide a source of income for yourself because it makes you "depressed."

Speaking only for me, YOU'RE FIRED! I want my part back!

People that have worked and payed their taxes aren't leaches. Leaches are the ones who want a free ride or their to lazy to work. These people have more reasons not to work than a Chinese phone book has Chin's.

I think it would be much more embarassing to be unemployed. I worked one winter as a grocery bagger while I was contracting and going to University. Had no options, things were slow and bills need to be paid. Didn't like it much, but you do what you have to do.
As far as the new truck, I drive a 1990 Chevy 3/4 ton ext cab longbox. The A/C hasn't worked in years. I have a nice house that I built with my bare hands in my spare time while I was working full time. Took me 7 months of every waking moment of everyday except for two weddings that I attended on Saturday afternoons. The cattle and land are mostly debt financed but also invested the money I made selling my contracting business which I also built from the ground up. Had to sell because of a severe problem with severe allergies, asthma and a breakdown of my immune system, also related problems with arthritis in my back, hands and, knees. I was warned by the doctor that I should change careers six years earlier or something like this was going to happen, but when you are trying to support a family and make your place in the world, you do what you have to do. Now, I have a mostly office job but when I was 25, although it was my goal to have an office job, I had alot of clawing and bootstrapping to do to get to where I am. Don't tell me how embarassing it is to bag groceries because millions of people do it everyday.

So what do you think now, CRR? Will 2 more years of training help overcome this obstacle? Maybe some type of embarrassment relief counselor by his side for a few more years after that?

Really admire your story, however. A great example!

But now I'm starting to have a brainstorm! Your great example, combined with your idea of a couple of years of training for him....

Hey, GP? How's your French? Like soccer?
