Dr. James Spears, Franklin, KY, Embryo Transfer specialist and Reproductive Physiologist is a Facebook friend. He served a four year term as a Board Member of the American Embryo Transfer Association (AETA).

I ask him the following question copied from my text conversation:

Question: I AI on natural heats. Some breeders give a shot of GnRH at breeding if they think they are early to accelerate release of the egg. My vets says that is unproven. Says it does not hurt but studies reveal makes no difference. Which is it?

His Response coped from our text conversation:

Timed breeding on - large groups of animals given Gnrh at breeding did show a small advantage - 7-8 % higher conception than those not getting Gnrh. I would assume that the same rational would apply for breeding from natural heats.

So, whatcha gonna do Ron, pick up that extra 7-8%?

You might end up with 108% conception rate.

I might give it a go this year.

Ken

If I have any reason for doubt, I will give it.

BTW: I ask him where he gives reproductive hormones... I'll not start that discussion again. ;-)

I finished giving PG to my 8 month old calves yesterday, I gave them in the neck with a 1 1/2 inch 20 gauge. If you are not careful to stay off the center of the neck, that length needle will hit the cervical vertebra.

Ron, I've took a few cows there to flush, and had some embryos put in there. Its been a few yrs, the 2 sons did most everything for me. I did meet DR Spears a couple of times, they have alot going on around there!

Your right about that needle in the neck. 1 inch in the neck for me, I always felt like I went to the other side of the muscle with 1 1/2.

I would assume
So you're saying we should all jump on the band wagon based on assumptions?

I posted his text. I did not provide an interpretation of his words.

My commentary would be that he wanted to be cautious. The study he cited was for timed AI. My question was for natural heat AI.

My practice has not been to use GnRH. I am still not a strong advocate on good natural heats.

I'm from the United Bull Workers Union and we are totally opposed to this AI nonsense. What's wrong with a little old fashioned romance for gosh sake?

You have no sense of adventure TT, using AI you can breed for calves with white legs and a thriving niche market.
