Giving Tetanus Shots To New Born Calfs

Help Support CattleToday:

ive never heard of anyone giving tetnus shots when banding, though i'm not very familiar with this method of castrating. i always give tetnus shots when castrating with a knife or razor but these calves are older. how long are tetnus shots effective?

Stepper,

There are two types of shots for Tetanus, an antitoxin that lasts a few weeks and a vaccine that takes longer to be effective but lasts several years. If you do a search here for Tetanus you'll find lots of discussions.

I banded my calves last year at 500 lbs and I used the Tetanus vaccine Barvac CDT. There is also a blackleg vaccine called Covexin 8 that has Tetanus in it. BarVac CDT is inexpensive but you have to give them two shots (a few weeks apart) and I banded when I gave the second shot and had no problems.

Anyway, if you're banding around birth I really don't think you need the Tetanus shot at least I won't this year as I'm doing it much earlier.
