As many of you know, we mostly run on BLM but were pulled off due to drought conditions.
Next weekend we are branding and shipping to the our summer permit on the mountain an hour north of us.
Part of the shipping day is the trek up the mountain to the bottom pasture in the permit. It takes about 4 hours to drive the cattle up on horseback as this is wilderness, no roads, and certainly no trailers.

So, the problem... Our calves have been laying around with their mamas with no concerns about following her anywhere as she cant get far.
Our concern is they will just run back to the bottom of the mountain on shipping day.

So today we took a mini cattle drive to make them move.
It certainly did not go smoothly, but we all made it back.
My four year old got to ride under his own control, necessity due to a wreck about to happen. My 7 year old pushed cows for her first time and learned a lot about what to do and what not to do.
My eight year old manned up and was able to go solo on a wing for a bit to help control the path and slow them down.
Great day, long day. Hope the calves learned as much as the kids.
