Thinking about a gelbvieh bull for some baldy cows, anyone who has done this before have any hints on EPD's I should be looking for? Any pitfalls in doing this cross?

Here's the three I have. Sire threw really light calves so all these were in the 45-50 lb range. Can't tell you much about them because they are all less than 4 months.

Depending on the bull(of course) it should put a lot of pounds on the ground for you. Send me the reg# and i will evualate the epd's for you.

More muscle and more variation than English on English.
Seem to come solid color.
Cull hard and you should be happy.

don't understand that part. a purebred GV should true those calves real well.

Using the bull on adult red and black baldies. I like Y104, Y126, and Y617 for our operation. I just don't know how these EPD's transfer into baldy numbers. We work full time, and problems calving usually means a dead calf and cow. I don't need to raise the biggest calf, but I do need a live calf. After that, I look for good gain on milk and grass. I really like G026A, but don't like his birth weight. He was a wee little guy, something with his numbers don't add up to me. Thanks for any opinions!

Those are the only numbers I have....thanks for trying to help, anyway. I appreciate it. I can't imagine Im going to have any calving problems with these big ole cows, just wasn't sure what to expect as I have never messed with gelbvieh.

I have some herf/RA/SH and Herf/Saler 'bladies', and I was really happy with the way the Gelbvieh put meat on the frames.. so far I've got 6 cows that are 1/2 Gelbvieh and they are all good cows, with 3 more coming this year.. a couple of them had 650lb first calves at weaning which I think is pretty respectable... I think my grass is a bit lusher than wyoming though.

Dunno about those bulls, but a decent Gelbveih on baldies should be the cat's meow. I don't see a downside to it except the high prices right now, and that's just part of the deal.

Have you seen GV knocking the white off of herf F1s females better then angus?

I have seen a hetero blk GV bull knock MOST of the chrome off a shorthorn...don't know about the baldies

Well,...bought a bull. Homozygous black. Will run him with a polled hereford bull..........(and some cows).

You should get some great heterosis on those cross calves.
