I have recently fallen in love with gap fences. Especially since I came up with this trick to open and close them and keep them tight.

I know this is probably really simple compared to some of the stuff I see you all post, but sometimes the simple stuff makes life easier. I only open this maybe once a year.

you are correct; it is a nice simple design and looks like it will work just fine. thanks for sharing.

Have you patent your gap ideal yet? With good marketing and advertising might make a lot of money.

Actually, my design is based on a commercial design that I didn't want to pay $35 + shipping for.

And, that particular bungee cord wore out quick from cows playing with it but the replacement is a flat sided rubber one that is working well.

This gap is 20' wide and much much cheaper and lighter than a fabricated gate.

Here's what I use. Find a piece of Osage Orange (or Oak I suppose) the length that suits your arms and weight for the lever. Needs a short yoke as a lever point. Pretty simple, easy and no time to make and no cost.

We used to use old hames for that until they got to be in short supply. We would pull the hame all the way around back to the brace and put a loop of wire over it to hold everything in place.

A lot of them around here are fastened like this. Generally a juniper limb and a piece of wire. Made to go below the top wire. Lever it around and them drop the handle and tuck it behind the third strand. Quick and simple to open and close and costs nothing to make.

A rancher I worked for 40+ years ago would make these in his spare time in the winter. My neighbor made this one not too long ago. Nothing new under the sun. About 3 or 4 feet of old pipe. A piece of flat bar about 16 inches long. Some old chain. Weld the pipe in the middle of the flat bar. Heat up the flat bar and bend it into a U on the anvil. Weld the chain to the flat bar beside the pipe. Weld a hook on the other end of the pipe... Chain on the post. End of the gate in the U. As you swing the pipe around it tightens the gate. Hook on the top strand of wire.
