Galloways

Help Support CattleToday:

Bagtic; I do remember when angus and herford and other breeds were a lot smaller than they are today. And I have herd comments from packers that it is hard to sell the gaint stakes they are producing in todays market. From what I,ve herd medium size cattle are the most feed efficient. I would like to see the reserch data on mini feed eff. These aren't just small cattle, they are mini's. It kind of sounds like a longhorn guy that was trying to convince me that he was raiseing them for their great meat, which I don't dispute. If its the meat your after then why haven't you dehorned them?

We all rationalize what we have or what we want as being justified.

2.I feel that by breeding miniatures its only further developing undesirable traits of dwarfism etc of our larger breeds. The beef industry needs the maximum production, beef per acre, weight, meat quality etc etc that can be attained. Breeding miniatures does not perpetuate this.

Colin,

1.Miniatures have NOTHING to do with dwarfs.

2. Studies indicate that:

A. smaller animals will produce more pounds of beef per acre.
B. produce less damage to the range.
3. have higher feed conversion efficiencies
4. have higher fertility rates.

OTOH, sheep and goats, both smaller than cattle, will also produce more meat per acre.

Check this website. Remember it is possible to raise at least two and usually three minis on the same range as standard breeds.

At 2:1 I doubt many people would fall short of current production. At 3:1 I imagine most would come out better.

Especially look for 'Brightlites'.

Oops! I believe this site may have more poses, etc.

Ok I went to these sites. Looks like adverts. to me. I'm trying to be open minded about this. Please direct me to the research studies about these mini's.

This site only suggests that studies be done.
