We had a calf born late Sunday night in snow and below zero temps. Helped get him somewhat dry and under shelter, watched him nurse. Monday morning he was still extremely cold. We got him warm and dry in the Pathfinder (truck still won't start 😡) and now seems good but his tail froze maybe 5 inches on the end. Was bloody and now is shriveled up. Anything to be done for "Rudy's" tail or will that take care of itself?
Still single digits here and more snow falling.

tail should be fine. Dairy farmers use to put castrating bands on cows so the tail end would fall off. preventing cows from switching their tails into farmers face at milking time. if it continues to bleed, you could put one just above the bleeding but I would think the bleeding would stop on its own. nice job of rescuing him before he got too cold and a little TLC to get him warmed back up.

It will probably take care of itself. If you felt that you had to do something you can go 1 or 2 joints higher on her tail and put a green band on it. It will fall off eventually either way.
This cold weather is rough I've seen calves with their legs frozen solid. They don't make it. Our will be fine with a short tail.
