Brahman cattle have to be hot branded in order to be registered with ABBA. A stupid "rule" in my opinion, but then, ABBA didn't ask me for my opinion. 8)

What is on all the other locations?
Ours was the left shoulder with no ear notches. That wasn't my first choice, but that was the only location that was left available.

I know what the locations are I was just wondering why you couln't use your 1st choice. What was on that location that you coyuldn't use i?
We brand our ranch brand on the top right hip and the animal ID number (My numbering system, usually 3 digits - 1st = last number of birth year - 2nd and 3rd are dam number; example heifer 423 would be born in 2004 to cow number 23) on the lower right leg.

There was a big push a few years ago by some feedlots and packers (especially Future Beef) to give bonus for no brands and/or corner brands-- Like $10 per head extra for no brands, $5 for shoulder and hip brand and none for rib brands.

I am working from memory here but I believe you can register a brand on the hip, lower back leg, side, shoulder, and lower front leg on either sid eof the animal. The hip is the least obtrusive place with the least hide damage. I think the only thing you would be docked at the sale barn for would be a really big side brand.

This is the first one I've actually built myself. I made it from 2" x 3/8" flat iron. The brand is around 3" tall . It looks pretty good on wood, but I haven't put it on an animal yet, and was wondering if I should have went with a 1/4" wide face instead of 3/8". Everyone I've showed it to said "Man, that's a heavy brand!". The brand is registered through the county, on the left hip.

3/8 sounds awfully heavy to me. Did you put vents in the face if you have crossed lines?
