IMO for $500 you ought to buy it. Scrap price is higher than that. As far as the SOS transmission is concerned the wrong folks work on them. Most Ford/New Holland tractor dealerships do not have an automatic transmission specialist and that's what it takes to do the SOS properly. My Dad bought a Ford 3000 diesel w/SOS in 1963 (I think) and had the transmission rebuilt three times. I then rebuilt the transmission in 1975 and it worked until two years ago when I twisted the input shaft off. All gears still worked (obviously). By the way, most of the control units inside the transmission use Ford C6 automatic transmission parts and racing clutches made from bronze are still available so if you have to rebuild the SOS take it to a transmission shop as a bench job and have them rebuild using HP parts. It'll work for ever after that until you break hard parts then you're screwed since hard parts are not available.
