ford 801 workmaster with select o matic

In my craigslist travels buying gates I found someone that has 1 hasn't ran in close 2 ten years and he told me he would sell it for 500.00 straight tin over good condition under a shed. Rear rim is rusted out on one side. didn't take pics left phone in truck while taking down gates and carrying them in a monsoon rain. Should I get it tinker with it or let it stay where its at. I don't want a $ pit or something I can't get parts for its just for me to buy fix flip.
 
He said was parked when he bought his ford 5000. Said ran fine up until that point. That's a long time for it to have sat to me.
 
If you don't need it, buy it. The price is right, but if you want to operate it someday I would try to find a local mechanic familiar with the Select-O-Speed.
 
Gas burner I've been asking old timers around here but no one really remembers select o they remember the 801 but I guess most people chose regular gears

Seems most peope avoid the Select O Speed transmissions like the plague. They weren't known for reliabilty, and parts these days may be tough to get. We had a tractor with the SOS growing up, maybe a 961? I actually liked it, but I wasn't the one that had to work on it. :) If you don't know anyone that knows about SOS, you could end up with a headache. On the other hand, at that price it's tough to go wrong.
 
Good price but at local auction I can find 8n and 9n all day running needing a lil work for 1200 I'd hate to buy it put 1000 in it then end up with a big boat anchol lol yea parts is what worries me. HD its like that but shifter on dash.
 
If the select o speed works then its a good price. If the SOS is bad then its too much since some parts for the transmission are NLA and finding a mechanic these days that knows anything about rebuilding and adjusting a SOS are as rare as hens teeth.

Since its a gas burner it should be simple to get running and test the trans out.
 
Cabo not sure. I wouldn't even attempt it. I buy tractors in running condition may need some work tires stuff like that I paint them top to bottom replace rusted bolts and sell them I try to stay away from major overhauls.
 
IMO for $500 you ought to buy it. Scrap price is higher than that.

As far as the SOS transmission is concerned the wrong folks work on them. Most Ford/New Holland tractor dealerships do not have an automatic transmission specialist and that's what it takes to do the SOS properly. My Dad bought a Ford 3000 diesel w/SOS in 1963 (I think) and had the transmission rebuilt three times. I then rebuilt the transmission in 1975 and it worked until two years ago when I twisted the input shaft off. All gears still worked (obviously). By the way, most of the control units inside the transmission use Ford C6 automatic transmission parts and racing clutches made from bronze are still available so if you have to rebuild the SOS take it to a transmission shop as a bench job and have them rebuild using HP parts. It'll work for ever after that until you break hard parts then you're screwed since hard parts are not available.

thanks for the input.. I am still not sure about that tractor though I have been reading about tranny problems and pto cable problems that they freeze up and are no longer available etc
 
I'd say bring it home, get it fired up and pressure washed, sell for $1500 and take offers... putting a whole lot of work into it probably won't pay

Good point nesi I will probably go pick it up this weekend if they still have it apparently not many want it ive been talking to them. Thom I will pick it up for ya but I need 300 for my troubles lol
