I was doing some light mowing yesterday with a Ford 3415 and 5' cutter. I had engaged and disengaged PTO multiple times no issues. When I finished mowing I noticed the PTO didn't disengage. The clutch will disengage just not the lever. I also notice the lever will travel further than normal. It seems to click into the positions and rotates the shaft going into the case/housing. No grinding or unusual noise. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts as to what could be wrong. Thanks

Two stage (dual) clutch as sounds like something maybe loose with the lever traveling further than it should be. Could be the pto side of the clutch went down. How many hours are on the tractor?

It's got 944 hrs on it. Yes it seems like something with the lever but I have no clue what is on the inside of this thing. On the outside everything seems fine.

A lot of good info out there on dealing with Live PTO issues

Here is a pretty good one as from reading you may have a clutch sticking problem as 944 hours the PTO clutch should still be good. Also it could be a broken spring or other broken disengagement piece, or there is some internal adjusting needing done. I hope it is just sticking as the tractor is probably around 20 years old and not a lot of hours..

Thanks for adding the post and I will follow it. The tractorforum issue is opposite of what I've got. My clutch is operating good just can't disengage at the lever. After messing with it a little bit I'm starting to think something internal may be "slipping" and not really engaging/disengaging. Where as I used to only have an on position and off position it now clicks an extra two times like there are three positions and I can move the lever until it hits the metal of the tractor. Something must've come lose inside I'm guessing

That is a very nice low hours tractor without all the EPA regs on it like the newer ones. If it was mine it would get what it needs. THose clutches sometimes don't last. I bought a new Kubota M6800 and it needed a new clutch at 700 hours and was babied. Kubota called it a wear item and I paid for the repair myself.

Doesnt sound like the clutch. Never been inside one but if it's like some of the other small NH compact tractors the shifter is on the left side of the seat?

The shifter handle goes thru a cover on the rear end housing. There are 2 or 3 roll pins on the linkage between the handle and the shift fork. I've seen those roll pins snap before.... if your lucky it's one that is visible thru an access cover.....

I tried mowing today before rain tomorrow. Took off to the pasture mowing the side of the road because I cannot disengage and as soon as I turn to go down the fence line guess what, the PTO disengaged and now I cannot get it to engage. There has got to be something inside the case that has broken or disconnected. So I unfortunately removed the bush hog and parked under the shed to start disassembly. I looked online for a repair manual. Has anyone ever used www.repairmanuals.co?

I got the lift cover mostly broke loose. It's hanging up on the right front of the cover. I don't want to break anything and I have no idea if something is connected or the gasket is sticking. The service manual I bought is not the correct machine and I cannot find one. Any ideas? Looking at the parts break down I don't see anything that should be connected.

It's sticking under where the hyd valve is mounting. The seal has broke from the rear all around the left side and about half up the right side and most of the front. For now I'm gonna keep wiggling it around and hope it's just the gasket/seal sticking.

And here is the problem. Looks like the roll pin worked it's way out of the shaft that engages the PTO.

chevytaHOE5674 was spot on the problem....I had a Massey 285 a few years ago the roll pin broke in the PTO lever, but you could see the problem easy on it. From you OP it sounded deeper to me. Good deal.

Yeah he called it right and I'm glad that's all it was. I had no idea what I was about to get into. Never been inside a tractor. Now to get it back together.

I would replace with a new roll pin. Also if possible look for a smaller roll pin that will fit inside the first pin. Gives a stronger more secure connection.

Drive the pin back in and run some safety wire through it and twist it tight. That way it could not back out.
