These steers are about 18 mos old. They will be on our
winter oat field for about 2 months more, then to
the butcher. The dark brown one has an angus dam.

P.S. We've never had any trouble with yellow fat...maybe
that results from legumes??

Wow, very nice. Were they completelty grassfed? How much do they generally weigh at slaughter and what % yeild do you get on them? I know they tend to be smaller, I am wondering if they would be a good fit for my program.

We do give alfalfa pellets at weaning until the crying stops.
The typical live weight would likely be from 1150 to 1350
or 1400 lbs depending on frame. We sell by the hanging hot
weight, and that would be from 325 to 390 per half
if memory serves correct. We don't have our scale
set up all the time so it's a guess on live weight. When
the butcher tells us the hanging hot weight, then we
let the customer know how much to make out their
check.
We have one cow that always has a big calf, and he always
takes longer to finish out and we usually sell him by the
quarter....and we are going to sell her this fall. She has
a 6 star rating on Bovigen tenderness, but her steers are
out of "synch" with the others because of the larger
frame.

does this hold true for Angus too??

I don't recall any calf that didn't cry or whine for a day
or so at weaning. That must be a trick question---and
I've missed the point. :p
